Celiac Plexus Nerve Block

Syringe with a needle and vaccine vials on a blue background.

Celiac Plexus Block

The celiac nerve block, is commonly used during evaluation of MALS to help determine whether the patient’s pain is coming from the irritated nerves around the celiac artery.

It is both:

A diagnostic tool & sometimes a temporary treatment.

What is the celiac plexus?

Nerves

The celiac plexus is a dense bundle of nerves located deep in the upper abdomen near:

The celiac artery, aorta, & diaphragm

These nerves carry pain signals from:

  • Stomach
  • Liver
  • Pancreas
  • Spleen
  • Small intestine

Compression

In MALS, the ligament can compress:

  • The artery itself
  • The surrounding nerve plexus

Many specialists believe the nerve irritation is a major source of symptoms.
