What is MALS

Main Symptoms

  • Rare condition involving compression of the celiac artery & surrounding nerves beneath the diaphragm 
  • The median arcuate ligament presses on the artery & celiac nerve plexus 
  • Can reduce blood flow & irritate nerves supplying the stomach & upper abdomen 
  • Often difficult to diagnose because symptoms mimic many other GI conditions

  • Epigastric Pain or Pressure
  • Postprandial Pain or Pressure
  • Chest Pain or Pressure
  • Vomiting
  • Diarrhea

  • Duplex or Doppler Mesenteric Ultrasound with breathing protocol
  • Computed Tomography Angiography (CTA)
  • Catheter Abdominal Angiography with contrast dye
